An enthusiastic Westie greets your arrival at Rockwood, with Susan and Jim not far behind. If the weather's good, you will be drinking tea on a sunlit patio before long, chatting away, surrounded by peaceful woodland. This is County Cavan, one of Ireland's best kept 'secrets' and a mecca for fishermen drawn to the many, many lakes here. A wooden gate leads from the garden to a wood where the red squirrel and pine marten are sighted, often along with a variety of other wildlife. Susan and Jim enjoy their home comforts, like real fires in the cosy sittin room on chilly, winter days. They designed the house themselves, knocking down an original building and using the stone to make raised terraces in the garden. The bedrooms are a touch spartan but everything looks brand new, with carpeted floors, matching pastel blue and yellow interiors and smellies in the bathroom. There's a conservatory-style breakfast room that looks onto the garden and at one end is a display of carved animals which Jim bought from Japan. Very much a B&B and Sue's egg and tomato sandwiches were spot on. Good value in a friendly home. Extract from ALASTAIR SAWDAY'S Special places to stay. www.specialplacestostay.com .
